ความหมายของครู

ครูจึงนับเป็นปูชนียบุคคลที่มีความสำคัญอย่างมาก ในการให้การศึกษาเรียนรู้ ทั้งในด้านวิชาการ และประสบการณ์ ตลอดเป็นผู้มีความเสียสละ ดูแลเอาใจใส่ สั่งสอนอบรมให้เด็กได้พบกับแสงสว่างแห่งปัญญา อันเป็นหนทางแห่งการประกอบอาชีพเลี้ยงดูตนเอง รวมทั้งนำพาสังคมประเทศชาติ ก้าวไปสู่ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง ฉะนั้นวันที่ 6 ตุลาคม จึงได้เป็นวันครูสากล เพื่อคนที่เป็นครูทั่วโลกที่เสียสละนำพาเราทุก ๆคน ไปถึงฝั่งฝันนั่นเอง
ประวัติความเป็นมา

วันครู ได้จัดให้มีขึ้นครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 16 มกราคม พ.ศ.2500 สืบเนื่องมาจากการประกาศพระราชบัญญัติครูในราชกิจจานุเบกษาเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2488 ซึ่งระบุให้มีสภาในกระทรวงศึกษาธิการเรียกว่า คุรุสภา เป็นนิติบุคคลให้ครูทุกคนเป็นสมาชิกคุรุสภา โดยมีหน้าที่ในเรื่องของสถาบันวิชาชีพครูในขณะเดียวกัน ก็ทำหน้าที่ให้ความเห็นเรื่องนโยบายการศึกษา และวิชาการศึกษาทั่วไปแก่กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ควบคุมจรรยาและวินัยของครู รักษาผลประโยชน์ ส่งเสริมฐานะของครู จัดสวัสดิการให้ครู และครอบครัวได้รับความช่วยเหลือตามสมควร ส่งเสริมความรู้ และความสามัคคีของครู

ทุกปีคุรุสภาจะจัดให้มีการประชุมสามัญคุรุสภาประจำปี เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้แทนครูทั่วประเทศแถลงผลงานในรอบปีที่ผ่านมา และซักถามปัญหาข้อข้องใจต่างๆ เกี่ยวกับการดำเนินงานของคุรุสภาโดยมีคณะกรรมการอำนวยการคุรุสภา เป็นผู้ตอบข้อสงสัย สถานที่ในการประชุมสมัยนั้นใช้หอประชุมสามัคคยาจารย์ หอประชุมของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และในระยะหลังใช้หอประชุมคุรุสภา

พ.ศ.2499 ในที่ประชุมสามัญคุรุสภาประจำปี จอมพล ป.พิบูล สงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรี และประธานกรรมการอำนวยการคุรุสภากิตติศักดิ์ ได้กล่าวคำปราศรัยต่อที่ประชุมครูทั่วประเทศว่า

“ที่อยากเสนอในตอนนี้ก็คือว่า เนื่องจากผู้เป็นครูมีบุญคุณเป็นผู้ให้แสงสว่างในชีวิตของเราทั้งหลาย ข้าพเจ้าคิดว่า วันครู ควรมีสักวันหนนึ่งสำหรับให้บรรดาลูกศิษย์ทั้งหลายได้แสดงความเคารพสักการะต่อวันสงกรานต์ เราก็นำเอาอัฐิของผู้มีพระคุณบังเกิดเกล้ามาทำบุญ ทำทาน คนที่สองรองลงไปก็คือครูผู้เสียสละทั้งหลาย ข้าพเจ้าคิดว่าในโอกาสนี้จะขอฝากที่ประชุมไว้ด้วย ลองปรึกษาหารือกันในหลักการ ทุกคนคงจะไม่ขัดข้อง”

จากแนวความคิดนี้ กอปรกับความเห็นของครูที่แสดงออกทางสื่อมวลชนและอื่นๆ ที่ล้วนเรียกร้องให้มีวันครูเพื่อให้เป็นวันแห่งการรำลึกถึงความสำคัญของครูในฐานะที่เป็นผู้เสียสละ ประกอบคุณงามความดีเพื่อประโยชน์ของชาติและประชาชนเป็นอันมาก ในปีเดียวกันที่ให้มีวันครูเพี่อเสนอคณะกรรมการอำนวยการต่อไป โดยได้เสนอหลักการว่า เพื่อจะได้ประกอบพิธีระลึกถึงคุณบูรพจารย์ ส่งเสริมความสามัคคีธรรมระหว่างครูและพื่อส่งเสริมความเข้าใจอันดีระหว่างครูกับประชาชน

คณะมนตรีได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 21 พฤศจิกายน 2499 ให้วันที่ 16 มกราคมของทุกปีเป็น วันครู โดยถือเอาวันที่ประกาศพระราชบัญญัติครูในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เมื่อวันที่ 16 มกราคม พ.ศ.2488 เป็น วันครู และให้กระทรวงศึกษาธิการสั่งการให้นักเรียนและครูหยุดในวันดังกล่าว
